I was recently invited by Austin TX based artist Erin Schwinn to participate in a postcard exchange project. I made a series of collage works, with the working title - Disembodied/Decontextualised/Dismembered...

I had decided a while back that I wanted to work with the 'stuff' I have collected and stored over the years in my studio. In fact I'd set myself the challenge to only work with this material as much as feasibly possible in an attempt to finally re-purpose all the 'stuff' (artists – you know what i mean).

So for this postcard project I decided to use images sourced from a pile of magazines that I've had for I don't know how long. I was thinking about the internet and the stream of images, words, headlines that pass through my newsfeed on a daily basis – and how things can be misrepresented, taken far out of context by media outlets and those reposting, but also the way my mind collates all the fragments of this information which often becomes archived in the most peculiar order. I focussed on images of people, figures, bodies... and painted over them – leaving mostly hands, feet, sometimes parts of the face or other body parts, and in most of them added text also sourced from the magazines, and through this process of collation/fragmentation/erasure the original meaning is altered, distorted, re-purposed, or lost and a new meaning or set of meanings emerges as the context is reorganised.

I have recieved already a number of postcards from the other artists. Once I have received them all I will share them :)
